Zoned announcements and timetable bells across buildings and outdoor areas — with EN 54 voice alarm where the fire strategy requires it.
School PA does three separate jobs and they have different requirements. Timetable bells need reliability and accurate timing. Announcements need intelligibility in noisy, reverberant spaces. Evacuation messaging, where the fire strategy calls for it, is life-safety equipment and must be built from EN 54 certified components with fault monitoring and battery backup.
Conflating the third with the first two is the expensive mistake, in both directions: buying certified voice alarm where announcements were the requirement wastes money, and using an ordinary PA system for evacuation messaging is a compliance failure that will be found at inspection.
Coverage across a campus is the practical challenge. Corridors, halls, sports areas and playgrounds have very different acoustics and ambient noise, so speaker types and densities differ by zone, and intelligibility should be measured at commissioning rather than assumed from a coverage drawing.
