The requirement for a payment network is stated most simply as: it must not stop, and it must be separated from everything else. Resilience is about the path to the acquirer rather than about the store's internal network. A second connection — often LTE — with automatic failover keeps tills authorising through a fibre fault, and it costs very little relative to an hour of a busy trading day.

In an estate, standardisation is what makes both achievable. One design, one addressing scheme and one configuration template mean a new store is provisioned centrally and a fault in any store is familiar rather than novel.
