Installing into a theatre or a clean room is a construction problem with clinical constraints attached. Every penetration through a sealed envelope has to be made good to maintain the pressure regime, fittings have to be flush and cleanable, and materials have to tolerate the cleaning agents used. A standard outlet plate is often not acceptable.

The programme is the other half of the difficulty. These rooms are in use, and the windows to work in them are short, planned well in advance and immovable. Work has to be sequenced so that whatever is opened can be closed, tested and cleaned inside the window — which means prefabrication and pre-terminated assemblies rather than field termination.

Because access is so constrained, spare capacity is worth more here than anywhere else in the building. Pulling additional cores during a planned window costs a fraction of arranging another window later.
